What is employee onboarding?

Onboarding employees is the process of quickly adapting to new employees and enhancing productivity. It involves teaching new hires about company culture and its mission, the attitudes, competencies, and expectations of their role responsibilities. The goal is to increase productivity and job satisfaction and reduce turnover.

Businesses thrive and expand when they can attract and retain the best employees. According to one study, an effective onboarding phase increases new employee retention by 82% and productivity by more than 70%. Onboarding is the process that connects the applicant and employee experiences (Lynton & Pareek, 2000).

A successful onboarding process installs a sense of belonging in new hires and makes them feel as if they've been with the company for years. On the other hand, a negative onboarding experience can result in early stress and uncertainty, leaving new employees uncertain about whether they made the right choice.

4 stages of employee onboarding

As a new hire, the onboarding process is one of the first impressions an employee will have of the organization. Up to this point, the person's relationship with the company has been primarily external. New employees can learn about the corporate culture and even get to know their coworkers (Stevenson, 2020).

Early onboarding

A good way to get new hires enthused about joining your organization is to provide them with pre-onboarding content. This is a good chance to give your new team a welcome email and encourage them to read on resources to aid them in the onboarding process. It's also a good idea to send an e-mail if you're not sure if they'll be able to accept the job offer.

New hire’s first day

The employees must feel secure and confident in the company's professional handling of their arrival. There should be a balance between welcoming new employees and providing them with a structured, well-planned orientation. This includes a warm welcome, a structured introduction to pertinent information, and pre-configuration of the employee's workstation, computer, phone, and passwords.

Onboarding in employees first week

The first day of a new employee's first week is critical for laying the framework and laying out the future of what they can expect. Meetings with other employees, frequent checks, the preparation of results, and a look into the future are all examples of epic first-week activities. Using the onboarding buddy system is strongly encouraged. Find a performer who can show the new hire the ropes, answer questions, and generally act as a supporter.

Feedback from new hire

The manager should conduct surveys of new hires throughout the onboarding process to determine what is working, what isn't, and where they can improve. Managers should encourage direct reports to provide regular feedback and to schedule follow-up meetings with their direct reports for an action plan.

Google released a list of five onboarding tips for managers before the Noogler started. The company's Noogler is an affectionate nickname used to refer to new employees. It was created after conducting several surveys and experiments. 

Google's onboarding process includes the following steps.

  1. Assign a peer buddy to the new hire.
  2. Assist the new hire in establishing a social network.
  3. Check employee onboarding once a month until the new hire completes six months.
  4. Encourage open communication and the real shocker.
  5. On their first day, meet your new hires. 

Before new employees' first day, ABC Private Limited sends them an email and a letter, as well as uniforms. New employees' will go on a familiarization tour inside the company on the first day, and they will be greeted with a welcome ceremony at the end. New hires' will designate an experienced staff member as a peer buddy. This will last for six months, after which the new hire will be required to provide feedback on their employment.  

Conclusion

Onboarding is the process of integrating new employees into an organization in a way that allows them to prosper and grow with and within the company. Onboarding is a cornerstone of overall talent management strategy.

  2. Onboarding is a human resources industry term referring to the process of introducing a newly hired employee into an organization. Also known as organizational socialisation, onboarding is an important part of helping employees understand their new position and job requirements. This socialisation must be monitored by the HR managers to improve the organisational culture and most importantly this is the first impression of the employee of the institution. hence this should be more formalized.

  5. Whatever is causing the world to turn upside down, it must continue with its regular activities. Workplaces must be operational at all times, and no one will be allowed to interrupt them. Pandemics, on the other hand, will have a devastating consequence. When you hire people from the bottom up, you must offer them with the essential training and briefing on the job task. Practical learning, on the other hand, is more successful than traditional classroom training. As a result, comprehensive onboarding is the greatest strategy to develop qualified staff.

  6. The four stages you've discussed here clearly demonstrate the significance of onboarding. What I see in recent organizations have failed to do onboarding, resulting in a tangle that is difficult to deal. As a result, it should implement from the first day and till achieve the company vision.
