How to Hire an Intern Who Can Do More Than Order Coffee

An internship assists interns in meeting graduation requirements while also providing them with valuable hands-on experience. When it comes to working with interns, they are fantastic because they are usually eager to learn and contribute. Misusing their talents, on the other hand, can be disengaging for them as well as a complete waste of potential and valuable resources for the company (Ichniowski, 2009).

Here are steps to hiring an intern who can do more than order coffee.

Internships are important not just for students, but also for establishing your company as the employer of choice in your area. However, if your internship program consists only of menial jobs and grunt work, you should reconsider your internship strategy and discover how to find an intern who can do more than order coffee (McCartney, 2020).

The Job Details

Consider the work (projects) you want the intern to do and make sure it relates to their studies and your business model. Choose a manager or supervisor with a great attitude and track record to report to, learn from, and develop the intern. Make a list of the top duties and tasks required for job success with your manager or supervisor.

Compensation

While unpaid internships are preferred because the experience is more valuable than the pay, paid internships are preferred because they are equal for both men and women and are not based on protected classifications. Again, pay your interns a stipend or a flat rate.

Recruitment

Find schools, universities, and community colleges to collaborate with to build a talent pipeline. Then interview the top candidates using standard job and company culture questions. Consider a realistic job preview or job shadowing to assess their suitability.

Assessments

Work with the manager or supervisor to identify important intern assessment skills, then use Skills assessments to create a customized internship assessment test. Because interns lack experience, you don't want to evaluate them in the same way as full-time employees.

Onboarding and Acclimation

Onboard interns like full-time employees. Interns must understand the company's culture, processes, brand, vision, and mission. Include interns in meetings and corporate activities, or even take them to a professional development event to make them feel like part of the company.

Internships are available in accounting, financial services, engineering, and computer science, as well as finance, global operations, human resources, marketing, and information technology
at World-famous companies such as Google, Facebook, Under Armour.  According to the jobs and salary website Glassdoor, the majority of positions last 10 to 12 weeks and pay around $24 per hour.

ABC Private Limited offers paid internships for six months and help in the development of future career paths.

Conclusion

Finally, make sure the internship program is enjoyable and allows students to learn, contribute, and grow. Then hire interns who can do more than order coffee.

Onboard interns like full-time employees. Interns must understand the company's culture, processes, brand, vision, and mission. Include interns in meetings and corporate activities, or even take them to a professional development event to make them feel like part of the company.

  7. For recent graduates who lack experience, the value of an internship is obvious: they move from theoretical knowledge to a real work environment. But companies also benefit from good internship programs, so long as they’re structured to train junior employees. Good internships are like good academic courses. Interns and employers should both learn from the process. Ask interns what new knowledge they acquired, how they collaborated with their team and what their impressions of workplace.

  11. Great topic Nadeeshan! Agreed sometimes most higher ups view interns as just errand boys & messengers this is an extremely unhealthy behavior which needs to be addressed. This could lead to these young talent being demotivated & demoralized leading to the organization not being able to get the fullest potential out of them.

What is employee onboarding? Onboarding employees is the process of quickly adapting to new employees and enhancing productivity. It involves teaching new hires about company culture and its mission, the attitudes, competencies, and expectations of their role responsibilities.
